Eligibility Information and Entry Guidelines
The application period for the 2010 College Television Awards is now closed. Winners will be posted after the Gala on April 10, 2010.
All application materials and uploads must be COMPLETED no later than 6:00 p.m. PST on
January 13, 2010.
Be sure to begin your application and uploading process well before the deadline as the site will be automatically disabled when the application period closes.
LATE ENTRIES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED – NO EXCEPTIONS
Please read through and follow all 'Entry Rules and Eligibility' information completely. Failure to comply with all the rules will result in disqualification.

Entry Rules & Eligibility
- Applicants must have been enrolled in a college or university at the time they produced and completed their piece, during the eligibility period, January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2009.
- You may enter only one piece per category.
- You must enter the name of your piece exactly the same way throughout this entire process. It is imperative that you are consistent throughout the process.
- For Example: 61st Primetime Emmy Awards should always be written exactly as
61st Primetime Emmy Awards
- DO NOT use quotation marks
- DO NOT start your piece with THE
- All pieces submitted must have been produced for school related classes, groups, or projects and must be verified by a Faculty Advisor. If we do not receive your SIGNED Faculty Form by 6:00 p.m. PST on January 13, 2010, your entry will not be accepted.
- The faculty form is to confirm the producers enrollment status and production date of the entry.
As soon as you complete your online application form, an email will automatically be sent to your Faculty Advisor for completion. You will receive a copy of the email.
It is YOUR responsibility to ensure it is returned to us by the deadline. No Exceptions.
Keep in mind that if you begin your application late, your faculty advisor may not have time to sign and return the form to us, in which case, you will be disqualified. (We recommend that you get this form signed before you leave for winter break).
- The faculty form is to confirm the producers enrollment status and production date of the entry.
- A piece may only be entered in one category except as noted in the music categories. (See more Music guidelines in item #9 below.)
- Only the student producer(s) of record may enter and must be listed as such on the credits. The person making the entry must be the student producer of record. (Exception - school's festival coordinators and other faculty serving in that role).
In the case of Music Composition, provided that the composer is a student, the producer can enter on behalf of the composer,
or the composer can enter on his or her own behalf. The composer will be awarded the
prize. (See more Music guidelines in item #9 below.) - Faculty may act in an advisory capacity only.
Entry Guidelines
- Entrants in the Loreen Arbus Focus on Disability Scholarship are required to fill out the form that is located in the category section of the application. When you select this category in your application, a category description box will open and you will find the link to the form there. Click on the link to download the form. You may either scan the form and email it to CTAsupport@emmys.org or fax to (818) 761-2827.
- Pieces in the following categories may not exceed one hour: Comedy, Drama, Documentary and Narrative Series (Comedy/Drama/Webisodes).
- Pieces in the following categories may not exceed 30 minutes: Animation, Music, Children’s, Newscast
and Magazine. - Commercial entries may not exceed one-minute in length, and must advertise a product or service. PSAs WILL be accepted.
- Narrative Series (Comedy/Drama/Webisodes): At least 6 episodes must have been produced within the eligibility period and be listed on the application form. You must submit 2 episodes. Do not submit additional episodes
- Children's: Content developed and targeted for preschool through 15 years of age.
- Magazine: You must submit the entire show. Only the producer of record for the entire episode is eligible. Individual segments will not be accepted. Segment producers are not eligible to enter.
- Newscast: Please specify if the show is daily or weekly and provide the airdate. The entire newscast must be submitted.
- Music clarifications:
Music (best composition):
For entries in the "Best Composition" category, all composers must be students. Composition is judged on the ability of the music to reflect the essence of the piece for which it was written. All music compositions must be original.
Composers will win the award. Either the composer or the producer may enter in this category.
- We do not accept the composition component only. The composition must accompany the video piece for which it was written or it will be disqualified.
Music (best use):
For entries in the "Best Use" category, composers do not have to be students. Entries in this area consist of works where the creative use of music is exceptionally effective.
- If you are submitting a music video, it MUST be entered in this category.Producer(s), not the composer, will win the award in this area.
If you are submitting a music video, the composition is original and composed by a student, the composition can also be entered in the Best Composition category. The $25 fee will apply. Please refer to How to Apply - Interactive Media will be judged on the following criteria:
- Linear / non-interactive video recording that demonstrates the viewer experience and highlights the features and functionality of the interactive television program, series, or service.
- The video recording must not exceed 6 minutes in length and must be uploaded according to the rules and guidelines of the competition.
- It must provide a minimum of either two minutes of, OR the combined total running time of, the interactive elements in the program, series, or service, whichever is shorter, and must include the interactive feature(s), either contiguous or edited, in an order that is closely representative of the actual viewer experience.
- Entries with more than 50% non-original material are not eligible. (There is no limit in the Documentary
category). - All PSAs/commercials/advertisements must be deleted from submission materials.
- A :45 second promo must be submitted along with your entry. A promo is a representation of the content of the submission. A promo is required for all categories except Commercial.
- If your entry is not in English, it must contain English subtitles or it will be disqualified.
- Entries of poor sound and/or picture quality will be disqualified.

Overall Creative Excellence
The depth, breadth and level of appropriateness of the unique creative features of the interactive media components within the video production.
Interactive Storytelling
The degree to which the interactive media features of the video production are integrated within a storytelling scenario and the extent to which they enhance, extend or impact the narrative experience or other content of the video.
User Experience
The aesthetic quality of the interaction model, including visual design, navigation, and ease of use of the interactive media features, that, in total, enhance the enjoyment and engagement of the viewer or user.

Please Note: The Television Academy Foundation recognizes that an interactive television program, series, or service demonstration video often requires explanation. You may provide this in the \synopsis section of your CTA application.
Please note, however, that the purpose of the linear / non-interactive video recording is NOT to create a “promo,” “marketing,” or “sizzle tape” for your interactive television project. The purpose of the video recording is to fully demonstrate or “walk through” the experience for the judges.
Voiceover that is not part the of the original experience is acceptable, but hyperbolic language, sound, music and / or editing similarly found in marketing tapes is strongly discouraged.
Incomplete entries will not be accepted.
