    Please check the Entry Rules and Guidelines carefully as most of your questions can be answered there.

  1. Who may enter?

    Students who are/were enrolled in a community college, college or university in the United States at the time they produced their piece, within the eligibility period, may apply. Only the student producer of record may enter and must be listed as such on the credit list. The exception to this rule is in the Music Composition Category. The producer OR student composer may enter on the Composer’s behalf. The Composer will be named as winner in that particular category.

  2. Can professionals have worked on the project?

    Professionals may NOT have functioned in the following positions:

    • Producer
    • Executive Producer (unless this title is given to the faculty advisor as "special thanks")
    • Director
    • Director of Photography
    • Camera
    • Sound Recording & Off-line Sound Editing
    • Off-line Picture Editor
    • Lighting Director
    • Technical Director
    • Production Manager/AD
    • Composer in "Best Composition" category

  3. During what time frame must the project have been made?
    All entries must have been made while the student was/is enrolled in college/university in the United States between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2010 as confirmed by a faculty advisor.

  4. Are U.S. Citizens eligible if they produced their film at a college outside the U.S.?

    No. This competition is only open to those students who have produced their video while enrolled in a community college, college or university the United States.

  5. Are non-U.S. Citizens eligible if they produced their film at a U.S. College?

    Yes, as long as all eligibility requirements are met and confirmed by a faculty advisor.

  6. Are Graduate Student Films eligible?

    Yes, as long as all eligibility requirements are met and confirmed by a faculty advisor.

  7. What is the purpose of the competition?

    The College Television Awards competition rewards excellence in college student video, digital and film productions by honoring student producers.

    While we recognize the various individual talents and efforts required to bring a video, digital or film project to fruition, these awards reflect the form and structure of the television industry. The producer is recognized by the Television Academy Foundation as the entity mainly and ultimately responsible for the whole and final product (with the exception of music composition).

  8. What is the best browser for uploading?

    Chrome is not supported. Please use Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari.

  9. What responsibilities do faculty members and advisors have?

    Faculty members will be required to review the authorization form that is emailed to them during the online application process. This includes verifying that the student producer was enrolled in the school as required and that only students worked in the roles as defined above.

  10. Are the winning projects screened for members of the Entertainment Industry?

    Promos of the first, second and third place winners are screened at the Awards Gala.

    Winning pieces will also be available online (subject to and only with proper clearance) on mtvU’s Best Film On Campus

  11. Last year I had to submit a :30 second promo and I don't see that requirement this year. Will I be expected to produce and submit a promo?

    Only upon notification that your piece has been selected for a Blue Ribbon Panel, will you be required to submit a :30 second promo.

  12. How will my piece be judged?

    Entries will be judged online by category in preliminary and secondary panels on a secure server by members of the Television Academy who are professionals working in each respective discipline. Viewing is restricted to competition judges and staff only.

    Finalists in each category will proceed to Blue Ribbon Panels for selection of winners in early to mid February.

  13. Will I be notified even if I don't win?

    Yes. All entrants will be notified of their final status once winners' information has been verified.

  14. How do I get to Los Angeles for the Gala if I win?

    Only one student producer of record for 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place winning entries will be flown to Los Angeles and given hotel accommodations for the black-tie Awards Gala on April 9th, 2011. All other winning producers are invited to attend, however they will need to arrange for their own transportation and accommodations.

  15. If there is more than one producer on my winning piece, how is the cash awarded?

    Each producer will receive a personalized trophy or plaque and the cash award will be shared equally.
